The Vegetable Garden – Year Three

Cucumber Sprouts

We finally got our seeds in about a week ago and I’m hoping the fact that we’re staring them in the greenhouse will give them a boost and get them up to speed. This year I have decided to fill the entire garden all 110 squares of it. We have some repair work and tilling to do before we plant and we’re planning on putting stone on our paths so that they stay manageable and weed free.

Year 3 Garden Plan
Our garden plan. Each number represents the number of plants in each square.

Last year we refined our garden, put in raised beds and planted in squares. This garden plan is pretty ambitious but we’ve only signed up for a half share at our CSA this year and I’m hoping to make up the difference with our garden. New this year are carrots, beets, pumpkins, watermelon, oregano, sage and radishes. I’ve also planted some additional herbs on our deck and plan to make a “children’s garden” that will grow by my girls tree swing with pumpkins, tomatoes and watermelon. We’re also going to make a hedgerow between us and our neighbors of blueberry bushes this year. All in all we should have a bumper crop of food. If all goes well I’ll need to learn to can.

What are your plans for your garden this summer?
