Last year we fenced off a portion of our yard to put in a garden but only de-sodded half of it. We planted tomatoes, peppers, chard and kale and it produced amazingly well for being neglected and weedy. This year I’ve decided to get serious about our garden and give my starts a nice place to grow. Orriginally we tilled the garden and made four open beds in which we were going to place rows.

Our original garden plan
I wasn’t too happy with this so I did some research on the square foot gardening method and came across a blog called My Square Foot Garden. I found this site immencely helpful. It helped me understand how to make a garden plan and also gave me tips on what to plant where and plant spacing.
Over the weekend my husband and I created 6 raised beds in our garden 4 that are 4′ x 5′ and 2 that are 4′ x 3′. We made these with 2″x6″ boards with 2″x”2 boards for corners. Even our unfriendly neighbor commented on how nice it looked.

The next step was to plan out the garden and layout what was going to go where. Again I used info from My Square Foot Garden to help me and Excel to do the layout. This is what I came up with.
garden plan
Our garden now consists of 110 square feet of planting space. I have most of it planned out but still have 21 square feet to take care of. I have been delayed in actual planting because believe it or not we have been under a frost warning. We seem to be in the clear so now if the rain holds off I should be able to get the rest of my starts and most things on this plan in the ground in the next couple of days. Once that’s done I’m going to start looking at trellising.
Are you gardening? What method are you using and have you found any sites helpful?
