Disposing of Old Disks
As you can see I have a huge stack of old disks, DVD and CD alike that I have collected over the years. Most of these have either really old applications or are old data disks that are scratched. All of them are completely unusable so I’ve been struggling with what to do with them. I know I could shred them and throw them away but that seems quite wasteful. This started me on a journey to figure out if and how these can be recycled.
I found out that disks and Jewel cases are not recyclable in most communities. They are #7 and 6 respectively. I found a ton of ideas for turning them into coasters, wall hangings and even an IPhone dock. Those ideas were all great but I’d have to give all of those things away as gifts all year long if I were to get rid of all of my CDs and DVDs. So I looked for straight up recycling centers and I found three places that will recycle the CDs/DVDs that you ship to them but the cost varies.
- http://www.cdrecyclingforfree.com – Free. You pay for shipping.
- http://www.cdrecyclingcenter.com – Free. You pay for shipping
- http://www.greendisk.com $6.95 for up to 20lbs of computer related items, disks, cords, phones, printer cartridges etc… You pay for shipping.
I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do with them yet but at least now I have options.
I’ll take some of your jewel cases if you haven’t thrown them away…
Check that off the list of tighns I was confused about.
