Last Farm Pickup

Our last trip to the farm yesterday was uneventful and unceremoniously quick which is unusual. It has been a slow summer for the crops with the unseasonal heat, deer and lack of rain our share has been meek. The food is most certainly not the only reason we have joined our CSA though. Helping to pull carrots, picking (and eating) cherry tomatoes and blackberries right of the plant and talking with friends while the children play in the sandbox, those are the reasons we are members. The girls can play and learn how their food is grown. They take part in the whole process of eating from picking the food in the field to putting it on the table. I look forward to next year when we can do it all over again!

I am hoping that we will be able to have a decent veggie garden here next year. I spoke to the landlady about it and she said that we might be able to use a strip of the field out back, which would give us plenty of room to plant whatever we want.

If that works out, with DE soils being as good as they are, you guys will probably get lots of veggies from us too! I am figuring on planting pole beans (limas), tomatoes (cherry and beefsteak), cucumbers, eggplant, watermelon, squash and zucchini, and maybe even some herbs: parsley, chives, garlic, basil, oregano and rosemary. I am, of course, really hoping that it works out that we can do it!

Of course even if we can’t do the whole garden, I am planning to at least do a good-sized container garden with some of the things. Either way, I am sure we would at some point end up with more veggies than we can possibly use, so you guys will be getting some goodies!

    Hope all is well! Hugs!
